Google AI Overview · Indonesia

Build for Google Search first. Measure AI Overviews separately.

Google's guidance is direct: there are no extra technical requirements, special schema types, or AI text files needed to appear in AI Overviews. Pages must be indexed, eligible for a snippet, useful, and compliant with the same policies that apply to Search.

TL;DR
  • Google says established SEO fundamentals also apply to AI Overviews and AI Mode.
  • No special schema, FAQ format, word count, or llms.txt file is required for inclusion.
  • Structured data should accurately match visible content and use types supported for that page.
  • Googlebot controls Search inclusion. Google-Extended does not control inclusion or ranking in Google Search.
  • Measure AI Overview appearances as observations, not guaranteed outcomes of a specific change.

What Google officially requires

To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. The same technical requirements and spam policies apply. There are no additional AI-specific requirements.

  • Allow Googlebot to crawl the public page.
  • Make important content available in readable page text.
  • Use internal links so relevant pages can be discovered.
  • Keep structured data consistent with visible content.
  • Use preview controls such as nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet, or noindex when appropriate.

These points come from Google Search Central's guidance for AI features.

What Google does not claim

Google does not identify E-E-A-T as a direct scoring factor, prescribe an answer-block length, or say that FAQPage, HowTo, or other schema types improve AI Overview citation rates. Google also does not require llms.txt. Those ideas may be tested as content or usability hypotheses, but should not be sold as documented mechanics.

A useful rule: if a tactic makes the page clearer and more useful for people, it may still be worth doing. Describe the reason accurately and do not attach an unproven AI ranking promise.

A practical checklist for Indonesian brands

1. Verify ordinary Search eligibility

Use Search Console to check index status, canonical selection, crawl errors, and snippet controls for the pages that answer important buyer questions. Fix these before attempting to interpret AI Overview visibility.

2. Match the user's language and need

Publish useful Bahasa Indonesia pages for Bahasa Indonesia audiences, and maintain separate English pages where international buyers need them. Use hreflang and accurate language metadata. Do not assume that language alone guarantees a local citation.

3. Make claims verifiable

Name authors where relevant, date time-sensitive content, link to primary sources, show methodology for original research, and remove unsupported superlatives. This improves reader trust even when no AI Overview appears.

4. Measure the result cautiously

Keep a fixed query panel and record when an AI Overview appears, which sources it links, and whether the brand is mentioned. Results can vary by query, time, location, and Google product state. Report what was observed, not what a tactic supposedly caused.

The bottom line

The safest AI Overview strategy is high-quality Google Search work plus disciplined measurement. Technical SEO, useful content, and accurate structured data are controllable. Inclusion in an AI-generated answer is not.

Frequently Asked

Quick answers.

What is Google AI Overview?
AI Overview is an AI-generated summary that can appear in Google Search with links to supporting web pages. Google expanded AI Overviews to Indonesia and Indonesian-language queries in October 2024.
How does Google choose AI Overview sources?
Google does not publish a complete source-selection formula. It says AI features use the same core systems and quality requirements as Search, may use a query fan-out technique, and can surface a wider and more diverse set of supporting links. Any more specific ranking formula should be treated as third-party observation, not official fact.
Can I optimize specifically for AI Overview?
You can improve ordinary Search eligibility and content usefulness, then measure whether the page appears. Google says no special optimization is required. Clear page text, internal links, accurate structured data, useful images or video, and current Business Profile information are among its standard recommendations.
Do FAQ schema and short answer blocks increase inclusion?
Google does not say that FAQ schema, definition lists, or a 40 to 80 word answer block increase AI Overview inclusion. Those formats may help readers when they fit the content, but they should not be presented as confirmed ranking factors.
Does Google-Extended control AI Overview visibility?
No. Google says Google-Extended controls use of site content for Gemini model training and grounding in Gemini apps and Vertex AI. It does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. Search access is controlled through Googlebot rules.
